The forceful torrent of mud, rock, and debris that came roaring down the Fairmont Creek on July 15th didn’t only bring muck into many areas of the town it brought new opportunity for Mountainside Golf Course. Last week, renowned golf course architect, Doug Carrick was on site to examine how to make the best use of mother’s natures materials to improve and redesign the affected holes.
Doug Carrick is the principle of Carrick Design Inc. based in Toronto and has designed more than 50 courses in multiple countries. Golfweek Magazine recently published its top 30 modern golf courses in Canada and Carrick’s name appeared on eight layouts on the list, making him by far the leading architect. Carrick’s expertise has been proven close to home with his design of our neighbouring Greywolf Golf Course and their world famous 6th hole. Nicknamed Cliffhanger, the 200-yard hole is sliced wide open by the Toby Creek Valley, a craggy chasm where the wind swirls and which gobbles up a couple of dozen balls each day. When a golfer successfully reaches the green from the tee, they are encouraged to yelp loudly, like a wolf, so that the lonely sound drifts down the canyon.
As Carrick stared out at the 16th hole at Mountainside Golf Course he was delighted with the challenge as he has yet to be presented with a project after an event like we had in Fairmont Hot Springs. On each project he believes great courses test shot – making and mental skills, respect the natural environment, provide a fair challenge for golfers of all abilities, and offer tremendous variety.
Carrick will be bringing his personal touch to a few different holes at Mountainside Golf Course. The events of July 15th will be long remembered in our area, so the new memories being created at Mountainside Golf Course will be something for everyone to see and experience.
Stay tuned for photos, updates and the grand re-opening of Mountainside Golf Course and Clubhouse.
