Starlight Challenge 2016
For 33 years Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has hosted the locally-famous Starlight Challenge. This month-long event attracts ski racing enthusiasts from around the valley to compete amongst friends for pride, glory and prizes every Friday night in February. Here’s how it works: teams of 4 compete in two-heats down our Ski Hill race course. The key to winning is not speed, speed doesn’t matter, it’s all about being the most consistent between your two runs. That’s the beauty of Starlight, everyone can win at whatever pace you’re most comfortable with. For those of you who are a little more competitive we do keep track of speed for your records, but no prizes are awarded in this category.
I took the challenge this year and it’s been a blast! In week one, I finished in a not-so-solid last place, both in speed and consistency; however, in week two I clearly had the track mastered when I finished with a 0.01 second difference between my first and second run. I think the change in attire between week one and week two may have been the main factor in my success. You judge for yourself, but my initial conclusion is that the Canadian Tuxedo just wasn’t designed for quality ski racing.
Week 1: Canadian Tuxedo
Week 2: way more successful
With Starlight Challenge running every Friday evening in February, there is still time to join us for a night of fun and friendly racing. Drop-ins are welcome, races start at 7:00 pm and it’s only $15. Skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers are welcome to compete too. Not interested in the races? There’s plenty of mountain to share with night skiers and snowboarders; you’re welcome to come up and cruise the runs until 9:00 pm. Looking forward to seeing you there!
